Blackboard Tip: Discussion Analysis in Blackboard Learn with the Ultra Course View

Instructor presence, according to students, is a factor in satisfaction in online courses. Discussions can assist in engaging students in your courses. Discussions broaden communication and foster strong connections among the group and with you.

Discussion activities can help you:

  • Encourage participation
  • Engage your students
  • Read all the responses
  • Assign grades

In courses with many discussions or high discussion participation, it may be difficult to measure student participation. Some instructors choose to award credit for completion, instead of in-depth grading. Discussion analysis in Blackboard Learn simplifies grading, so you have more time to engage with students.

Discussion analysis only appears for graded discussions and is available for courses delivered in English only. You can access discussion analytics from the Discussions or Course Content pages.

Check out this video to learn more about Discussion Analysis:

Discussion analysis provides a close look at each student’s discussion participation. Performance-based metrics shown in the analysis yield valuable insights to show you which students may need help, or are participating less than the desired amount. Blackboard's discussion analysis algorithm focuses on a student's content and provides details to help instructors evaluate participation.
