- Academic Advising
- Academic advising involves being guided through which classes a student should take and when they should take them. All students are encouraged to be advised to assure that they are taking classes relevant to their individual degrees. There are five categories of students who fall under mandatory advisement:
- Students with no SHSU GPA (all new freshmen and transfer students)
- Students who have below a 2.5 overall GPA.
- Students subject to TSI requirements.
- Students who have 90+ hours, including the current semester. This is to assure that they are on the right track towards graduation.
- Students who have no major on file and are listed as General Core once they have earned 45 hours.

- Capstone Course
- A capstone course is a course which must be completed in order to be awarded a Bachelor's Degree in General Studies. During the capstone course, students will conduct career exploration activities as well as complete a capstone project linking the three minor areas of study that comprise the student's personalized Bachelor of General Studies degree. Students will have research, review, and analyze the three academic minor areas and meld them into an innovative research report.
- Discussion Boards
- Blackboard’s discussion board feature allows participants to carry on discussions online, at any time of the day or night, with no need for the participants to be logged into the site at the same time. The discussion is recorded on the course site for all to review and respond at their convenience. The discussions may be graded as well. You may have multiple discussion board forums in your course – for example, you might choose to have a different forum for each topic. If you are using the Blackboard Groups feature, you may find it useful to have a discussion board for each group. A course discussion board can contain multiple forums; each forum may contain multiple threads; and each thread may contain multiple postings.
