SHSU Online is thrilled to announce that Jacob Spradlin is now the Executive Director of Online Instructional Development and Support at Sam Houston State University. With over 27 years of dedicated service to SHSU, Jacob’s journey from a student worker to his new role is a testament to his commitment, expertise, and passion for advancing online education.
Jacob’s leadership has been instrumental in the growth and success of SHSU Online, particularly since the inception of the department in 2009. Back then, Jacob served as a certified Blackboard Administrator and assistant director of training, expertly managing the learning management system (LMS) and delivering workshops when the department was called DELTA, which stood for Distance Education and Learning Technologies for Academics.
Since those early years, Jacob’s contributions to the institution have evolved. From providing seamless online experiences for both faculty and students, to designing online courses, to leading award-winning online faculty development programming, Jacob has always been a loyal and willing contributor to SHSU’s mission and the goals of the department.
In his new role, Jacob will continue to oversee the development and support of online instructional initiatives, driving innovation and ensuring the highest standards of digital learning at SHSU. He will continue to spearhead faculty development programming, which has now reached state-wide acclaim through programs such as the TSUS Faculty Development Day. In addition, he will also oversee the instructional design unit, which has historically been pivotal in creating engaging, accessible, and high-quality online courses that serve SHSU’s diverse student population.
Under Jacob’s guidance, the instructional design team will continue to leverage cutting-edge technologies and best practices to enhance the learning experience for students and empower faculty to excel in their teaching. When asked about his new role, Jacob commented. “I am excited about the change in my role at SHSU Online and what it means for the department. Aligning faculty development, course design, and research and communication allows us to better assist the instructors we support by identifying what I like to call “connective-tissue” opportunities where each of these areas has a crossover. When an opportunity is identified, all faculty-centric teams can work together for the best result!”
Jacob’s new role marks a new chapter for SHSU Online, one that promises to build on our tradition of excellence and expand the impact of our digital learning offerings. His vision and leadership will ensure SHSU Online remains a leader in digital learning, adapting to the evolving needs of students and the higher education landscape.
