Teaching Online With Blackboard Certification Series
The Blackboard Certification Series is the fully-online training option which SHSU Online has most recently developed and added to the training catalog. The certification consists of four courses aimed at preparing an instructor to master the online teaching environment through Blackboard. Courses included within this series comprise the following:
Blackboard Learn Course Building
This course is the first in a three-part series that will ensure you are well acquainted with Blackboard @ SHSU. Become familiar with the Blackboard environment including: layout, navigation, adding, editing, and deleting content. Attendees will gain control over their course’s navigation menu and learn how to interact with courses in an instructor role.
Blackboard Learn Communication
This course is the second in a three-part series that will ensure you are well acquainted with Blackboard @ SHSU. Learn how to communicate and collaborate with your students using Blackboard’s onboard set of tools. Announcements, Notifications, Email, Discussion Boards, Blogs, Journals and Wikis will all be covered.
Blackboard Learn Assessment
This course is the third in a three-part series that will ensure you are well acquainted with Blackboard @ SHSU. Attendees will learn how to assess student progress with Blackboard Assignments, Turnitin Assignments, Test/Quiz/Survey Creation and how each of these interact with the Blackboard Grade Center.
Teaching Online - Strategies for Success
This is a two week course that presents participants with the opportunity to explore best practices for creating engaging and effective online learning environments. Study up on and share your own best practices around encouraging participation, instructor presences, time saving strategies, testing & assessment and academic integrity.
Assessment Certification Series

Strategies & Practices for Effective Assessment
This three week online course takes an in-depth look at methods to increase success when it comes to evaluating students along with a look at the tools Blackboard employs to monitor, evaluate and report on student assessment. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: Hallmarks for Effective Assessment, Grade Center Basics, Best Practices for Effective Assessment, Grading Periods, Grade Columns, test Reliability and Validity and more. Effective Assessment Strategies and Practices course completers will receive a certification upon successful completion.
Engagement Certification Series
Designing Engaging Content
This self-paced, completely online, Designing Engaging Content course is put together so that SHSU instructors learn strategies for effectively designing and organizing content to increase student engagement within Blackboard courses.
Multimedia in Your Blackboard Courses
This course provides the Blackboard instructor with the knowledge and skills in both the acquisition and implementation of multimedia for online/face-to-face and hybrid courses. Technologies and best practices are examined in the context of student engagement and success. Topics covered include:
- Images in Blackboard courses
- YouTube videos in Blackboard courses
- NBC Learn media in Blackboard courses
- Video/Audio/Screen Capture with Kaltura CaptureSpace Lite
- Interactive Video Quizzing with Kaltura
- Best Practices in implementing multimedia in Blackboard Courses
Building Online Communities
Communication and collaboration are key facets to this online certification course. In this course, we will further explore some of the communication and collaboration tools Blackboard Learn has to offer. You will have ample opportunity to communicate, gain feedback and share ideas with your colleagues’ using of the tools. This online course covers:
- Online communities and the Instructor’s Role
- Best Practice and Learning Theory Around Discussion Questions
- The Use of Journals & Blogs
- The Use of Wikis
- Groups in Blackboard Courses
- Grading in the collaborative sapce
Blackboard Collaborate Ultra
This fully-online, self-paced course is designed to familiarize Blackboard instructors with how to use Blackboard Collaborate's new Ultra Experience in their Blackboard courses. This course covers:
- Web conferencing as it applies to education
- The continuous release cycle as it applies to Collaborate
- Comparing and contrasting session roles in the Ultra experience
- Navigating and participating in a session using the Ultra experience
- Setting up a Collaborate session in the Ultra experiences
- Using Moderator tools to facilitate a Collaborate session in the Ultra experience
Miscellaneous Sessions
Blackboard Ally: Instructor Use
This online, self-paced course allows instructors to learn how to utilize the Blackboard Ally tool to improve course content accessibility. Online materials and activities will guide participants through the instructor workflow, how to interpret accessibility scores/reports, universal design for learning and how to improve file accessibility.
