In An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Col. Chris Hadfield describes how the unconventional philosophy of “expect the worst, and enjoy every minute of it” has guided him to success as an astronaut, artist, and educator.

Now, SHSU Online and the Common Reader Program at SHSU want to see how you believe the values of hard work and accomplishing goals under stressful situations in an SHSU Online class can be connected to values portrayed in the book.

One winner will receive a $500 Scholarship and lunch with Col. Hadfield on Nov 1.

Create a Video

Create a social media video demonstrating how the themes in the common reader apply to taking classes online. Upload your video to YouTube for the world to see.

One winner will be selected from the entries for a $500 scholarship and lunch with Col. Hadfield. Videos will be judged on creativity and how well they convey the contest message.

About Col. Chris Hadfield

At 9 years old Chris Hadfield watched as the world celebrated the scientific and engineering feet of the age— man walking on the moon— and knew what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Since then, he has logged 4,000 hours in space, commanded the International Space Station, become the first Canadian to make a space walk, become renowned for his photography and music, and has transitioned into a new, unexpected role as a speaker and YouTube sensation.

He shares the life lessons he has learned and the wisdom gained— by being one of the relatively few people to see earth from above— in his book, this year’s SHSU Common Reader, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth.

About SHSU's Common Reader Program

The goal of the Common Reader Program is to encourage a cross disciplinary approach to a common intellectual experience. A committee spanning the entire range of university experience selects a literary work each year and develops guides for incorporating it into curriculum across campus. An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth is the common reader for the 2016/2017 academic year.

The SHSU Common Reader Program is developed and managed by SHSU First Year Experience: A Student Success Initiative.
