Kaltura and ProctorFree Implementations Well Under Way

As a result of overwhelming feedback from faculty, SHSU Online has begun the process of retiring Tegrity, replacing it with other products that provide more reliable and sophisticated functionality.

As results from a 2014 survey of SHSU faculty demonstrated, many SHSU Faculty found Tegrity challenging to use. In fact, survey results showed that 32 percent of instructors who completed the survey stopped using Tegrity because of technical issues and too many student complaints when utilizing the tool in their courses.

For the purpose of lecture capture, SHSU Online recommends Kaltura, a product that offers a new level of interactive video tools for faculty. With Kaltura, faculty and students can easily create, upload, clip, manage, publish, and deliver high quality video to any device, live or on demand. Faculty members can also post video in their assignment prompts, tests, announcements, blogs, discussions, feedback, and other areas.

proctorfree logoFor the purpose of proctoring online assessments, SHSU Online provides ProctorFree, a cutting-edge software solution that is designed for student verification and exam proctoring. ProctorFree authenticates students using a sophisticated facial recognition algorithm, and maintains continuous identity verification throughout the exam, while monitoring for a variety of events, behaviors, and patterns typically associated with cheating. These anomalies are tracked and reported to the faculty member when they occur.

The process of migrating previously recorded course videos from Tegrity to Kaltura is being managed by SHSU Online staff, throughout the Summer 2015 terms. During this time, no interruption in video service is anticipated. While the tools used to deliver video in online courses has changed, faculty members teaching during the summer and fall terms can expect their course videos to be available in Blackboard by the start of the summer and fall terms respectively.

Training on both the Kaltura and ProctorFree software tools is available through SHSU Online, and it will be offered throughout the remainder of the summer and fall. In addition, SHSU Online instructional designers supporting each college can work one-on-one with faculty who are interested in learning more.

For questions about Kaltura, or ProctorFree, faculty should contact the SHSU Online instructional designers for their college or the SHSU Online Support Desk. See also our Tegrity FAQ page on this site.

SHSU Online is here to support you in your courses, and we are committed to doing everything possible to make the transition a smooth one.
